Crown Thinning

Thinning a tree removes selected elements so the tree maintains health and remains suitable for its surroundings.

A percentage of the smaller branches are removed leaving the main framework intact which reduces weight and allows more light through.

This is a good alternative to crown reduction for light issues and leaves the tree looking more natural than a heavily reduced tree.

Typical reasons for crown thinning include:

• Improving the aesthetic appearance of a tree
• Revitalising an over mature tree by removing weak branches or poor growth
• As a preventative measure against storm or snow damage
• To retrain growth on another direction
• Allowing more light through the crown, to open up a view

Crown Lifting

The canopy is lifted by removing all the lower branches up to an agreed height.

Lifting is often carried out on trees in urban environments where pedestrian footpath or a road runs under the tree, where greater light is required, for example to a lawn, or to prevent damage to property.

Many types of three can be made to look more appealing by lifting and if carried out skilfully then excessive weight will not be displaced causing potential instability.
